Why You Should Watch : The Haunting of Bly Manor

modern.

The year is 1987. You are at Bly. Miles is ten. Flora is eight.

The Haunting of Bly Manor is the second entry in the Haunting series from Netflix. If you did not watch the first season, (The Haunting of Hill House) please do, but it is not required for this season.

The coolest thing about in this series, would be actors and the characters they play from one series to the next. This series is far more steeped in mystery with a side of British posh that adds to the overall mystique. Bly Manor explore themes of family, unrequited love, the concept behind memories. The show's true strength is its ability to jump between narratives overlapping and timelines. You get so swept up in the story that’s presented you forget to stare deeper into the lake.

Characters:

The Characters in Bly are at times perfectly splendid as well as absolutely dreadful. To be frank the pleasantries of each character adds to the overall unsettling nature of the show.

Our main Character Danni, is a fresh face college grad who wants to try to be an (Au pair) or live in nanny, for a family. She looks in the paper and applies for to be a live-in nanny for a rich family that resides in the countryside, called Bly manor. Danni as the main character is the perfect person to follow as the story continues. The story as a whole has many moving parts and Danni's character sees to turn them on their head, and then eventually she breaks.

Owen, oh Owen. The home chef. Owens's arc becomes more tragic as the story unfolds. Finding more about Owen he is used to describe the town of bly from a local’s perspective. This character is refreshing every time on screen serving as visual bleach for the muddy love story and a beacon of hope for the residents at Bly Manor to look forward too.

Even with the tragedy what happens to Owen it does not compare to my favorite character, Hannah Grose. As stories go on it is interesting and fun for me to rewatch the earlier episodes to really see which character “gets it”. The amount of tragedy and truth bombs reveled Hannah Grose does not get it until it is too late.

The rest of the characters feels like that, characters in a show. The only downside to Bly Manor is its use of these characters and journey that derives from their decision making.

Notable episodes:

Episode 4,5,6.

Strap in and binge these together.

Typically, I watch 2 episodes of a show like this, because of how they write it. Most shows want you to binge them all in one sitting. But I feel if you 2 or 3 at a time the suspense and drama mount higher because you are looking forward to next binge rather than burning yourself out on a show like this.

Gripes

This show is long. Not in time on screen but in delivery and the presentation of scenes. This is less of a block buster horror show, but rather a quiet slow burn that will leave you gassed.

So yes, you should watch the haunting on Bly Manor. I’m certain it will give you a well needed break from whatever else you are watching. A long 9 episodes, mini-series like these deserve to be watched with an audience. Grab some snacks, maybe some wine and relax at the cozy abode called Bly Manor and don’t stare to hard at the cracks. You might see something you can’t unsee.
